Well done to Donna for crossing the London to Brighton finish line on 24 May 2014. She completed the gruelling challenge in 23 hours and 18 minutes.
Donna, a Regional Manager at Pulse Community Healthcare laced up her trainers and took to the streets to kick start their fundraising efforts for DEBRA.
The national charity supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - a painful genetic skin blistering condition which can be fatal.
Sufferers have incredibly fragile skin, which tears and blisters at the slightest touch. There is currently no cure and the only treatment involves a painful daily routine of changing dressings and looking after sores. DEBRA funds research to find effective treatments and ultimately, a cure for EB.
The charity is close to our hearts as our young service user, Mason White, inspired us to support it after suffering from the incurable disease. Mason’s face is marked with scabs and his feet are so painful he’s never been able to wear shoes.
Jackie Lindsay, Managing Director of Pulse Community Healthcare said: “We chose to support DEBRA because of the history we have in supporting people with this condition. Our teams always want to get involved; after seeing a heartfelt presentation on DEBRA and the work they do, Donna decided to walk to raise awareness and money for the charity.”
And walk she did…Donna faced the 100km in the rain and mud. Of the 3642 people who entered, just over 1400 made it to the finish line. Donna is an inspiration to us all and has so far raised over £800 for the charity.
After the race, an exhausted but elated Donna said: “The bad weather and rough terrain resulted in a number of falls, especially when it got dark.”
“I saw the medics and they advised me to stop walking as I was so exhausted. I’m pleased I managed to hobble across the finish line for Mason and others like him. The charity does such a fantastic job for them it’s important we do whatever we can to help. Please help make a difference by sponsoring me for this great cause.”
