Hi I'm Nikki, your new blogger from the lovely village of Great Lumley, Chester-le-Street. All this blogging malarkey is new to me so please be patient. I'm 28 years young and found myself suddenly paralysed overnight in February 2011, caused by a neurological autoimmune disease called Transverse Myelitis.

This affected me from C2-C7 and as you can imagine, my life changed dramatically. I am now paralysed from the chest down and reliant on a wheelchair and 24/7 care. After initially being looked after by my long-term partner, I finally received care through Pulse after this relationship broke down. This was back in January 2013 and I've never looked back since. They are my support system. I have a small team who know me inside out. They're more than support workers, they have become my friends.

September has been pretty manic for me so far, I had a suprapubic catheter fitted at the end of August and have experienced two infections so far that make you feel pretty yuk. They have however not held me back from taking Finlay (my baby) out on walks; we even adventured to Chester-le-Street Riverside Park for a stroll along the river to take in the scenery on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We've also enjoyed snuggles, and if you haven't gathered by now, my friends have their human children and I have a canine child who I could not live without. Finlay also has a soft spot for all of my team especially if he's getting belly rubs and treats.

I am also extremely excited about a dream holiday to Barbados that I spontaneously booked whilst out shopping at the Bridges in Sunderland. Totally spur of the moment, I only went in for a quote and said "Go on then, I may as well book it." I'm not impulsive or anything... haha! This is a going to be a massive achievement for me as I've never flown since I've been paralysed and I've dived straight in at the deep end on this one. Well you only live once so you may as well live your dreams. I am also going to be working on my upper body strength and balance over the next couple of weeks as my aim is to be able to self transfer in time for my holiday on May 9th 2016 - exciting stuff.

As you will see by my photos I got into the spirit of things whilst shopping. I tried on these super cute sunglasses (I'm sure they're meant for children but I'm so tempted to buy them the next time I'm there). I'll keep you updated on whether they end up in my suitcase.

Well that’s all for my first blog. I'm sure to have more to tell you all soon.

Nikki

    Hello Nikki

I read this last week, and I am looking forward to an update, how's the upper strength work out going?

As I am a cheeky scouser....do you need anyone to accompany you on your hols :0) Or maybe squeeze me into your suitcase, as booking your holiday is any amazing accomplishment and will be a brilliant adventure.

    Green with envy - Auds
