Support Worker – Learning disabilities and Complex care – Wallsend, Tyne and Wear

We are currently looking for compassionate and inspiring support workers who would like to develop their skills and experience within learning disabilities and autism. We have a male client living in the Wallsend area who requires a learning disabilities and autism support worker to provide day to day assistance within his own home and out in the community. 

Learning disabilities and autism support workers will be responsible for providing a high level of complex care and supervision for our client who has severe learning disabilities and cerebral palsy. The successful candidate will have had experience of working within secure units, a residential setting or have worked within a SEN School; experience of working within a complex/clinical care setting is also essential. Learning disabilities and autism support workers will need to have excellent communication and observational skills as our client is non-verbal; you will also be proactive in identifying and preventing triggers that can cause anxiety and frustration leading to challenging behaviours and/or behaviours of concern. 

This role offers short drop in shifts during the week (07:00 – 09:30, 15:00 – 17:00 and 19:00 – 21:30) and flexible hours at the weekend between 08:30 and 21:30. This great new opportunity offers a competitive pay rate of up to £8.41 per hour, dependent on experience. You will have a full UK driving licence as this role requires candidates to drive our client’s mobility car.

In order to support you with the unique demands of our packages we provide a range of specialist training which is tailored to the individual needs of our client. This training includes the following; Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA), Bespoke Autism Training and Positive Behavioural Support.

As a learning disabilities and autism support worker, you will be responsible for:
• Personal care
• Assisting with day to day tasks and activities
• Accessing the community and support networks
• Moving and handling
• Catheter care
• PEG feeding and care
• Cough assist
• Promoting choice and independence
• Setting boundaries and giving direction around appropriate behaviours
• Identifying and preventing triggers that may cause challenging behaviours and/or behaviours of concern
• Administering medication

The ideal learning disabilities and autism support worker will have:
• A diploma level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent (preferred but not essential)
• A current enhanced DBS on the update service (preferred but not essential) 
• A full UK driving licence 
• Previous paid experience in Health and Social Care in the UK (Learning disabilities and autism)
• Good knowledge of safeguarding and person centred care
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good understanding of professional boundaries
• Ability to use own initiative and work as part of wider team
